21st century learning in the library

In the library, we support 21st century learning practices by providing an environment where students are able to work according to their learning styles with a mix of individual and collaborative learning spaces.

Students have the opportunity to develop their collaborative and communication skills, their critical thinking and creativity through the programs and activities that are coordinated by the library throughout the year, such as the research tutor training and library and information week.

Supporting the school curriculum

The library supports the school curriculum by collaborating with the different faculties to select resources, which will meet the students’ learning needs. These include materials relating to the syllabus topics and study guides.

Classes regularly visit the library to utilise the facilities, borrow textbooks and complete research tasks. The teacher librarian actively collaborates with the classroom teachers to develop the students’ skills in information literacy and develop their skills for lifelong learning.

Careers and transition services

The Careers Adviser and the Head Teacher Secondary Studies have their offices in the library. They are available to assist students as they transition into, through and beyond St Marys Senior High School.

Using the library

Students must use their student cards to borrow laptops, textbooks, library resources and to book study rooms.

Students can access the library catalogue, known as Oliver, online through their student portal. The catalogue is available 24/7 with an internet connection so students are able to search for resources or renew their loans at school or at home.

Students can borrow up to five non-fiction items for a period of one week and two fiction items for a period of two weeks. Late returns may lead to a loss of borrowing and the use of library facilities.

Additional services

Students can scan documents to a USB using the photocopier in the library and can use their account to pay for any photocopying they may wish to do. Students can also pay to have materials laminated or bound in the library.
